On March 1, 1972, a group of investors headed up by William A. Schmidt opened the doors at 721 N. Kansas Avenue. This location was also the Long-Bell Lumber yard.

On February 17, 1978, Topeka Lumber became incorporated. Later that same year, William Schmidt became the sole stockholder of Topeka Lumber, Inc.

In 1982, Central Wholesale Distributors opened as a division of Topeka Lumber, Inc. Central Wholesale Distributors began, and continues today, a wholesale roofing supply distributor.

On May 5, 1988, Topeka Lumber, Inc. opened a second location at 2134 SW Westport Drive. This was previously the location of 84 Lumber.

In January of 1996, Timothy W. Schmidt became the President of Topeka Lumber.

On May 6, 1996 Topeka Lumber celebrated the Grand Opening of a new location in Lawrence, Kansas. The company name was then changed from Topeka Lumber, Inc. to Schmidt Builders Supply, Inc.

On January 1, 1997, Timothy W. Schmidt acquired all of the stock in Schmidt Builders Supply, Inc.

In June of 2003, Schmidt Builders Supply was purchased by John and Mary Duncan
